How to build a cornhole set
The first step in building your own cornhole boards is to decide what materials you want to use.
If you’re looking for a cost-effective way to make cornhole boards, then consider using cedar boards and stain them with a color of your choosing.
The next step is to decide which type of board you want. You can build either a “standard” cornhole board (approximately 4 feet by 2 feet) or a smaller one that’s just half the size of the normal one.
After deciding on the type of wood and size of your board, you’ll need to cut it down into smaller pieces. The easiest way to do this is with a circular saw, although this can be messy if you don’t know what you’re doing or if you don’t have any experience with power tools. Here’s how to build your own cornhole set:
1. Find the right wood for your boards. You’ll need 2″ x 6″ lumber for making the frame and 1/2″ plywood for covering the top of each board.
2. Cut all your pieces according to the dimensions on our cutting list (below). Then, drill holes in the ends of each board so they’ll fit onto your frame (see photo above).
3. Use 3-inch deck screws to connect the side rails together, then add the legs and cross supports by driving 3-inch screws through those holes as well (see photo above). Next, attach a pair of hinges on both sides of each leg so you can fold it up when not in use (see photo below). These hinges are optional but make transport much easier!
4. Cut two pieces of plywood slightly larger than your boards so they’ll fit snugly over them, then screw them down with more deck screws (see photos below). Finally, sand everything smooth and stain or paint as desired!
It’s not hard to build your own cornhole board. You can buy a kit or build it yourself with some materials and a little bit of patience. Building your own cornhole game will save you money and allow you to customize the size, shape and features that are right for you.

Build a Cornhole Game
Cornhole is a game that is played with two people or teams. The game requires four bean bags (or cornhole bags) and two boards. The boards are made of wood and have a hole cut out of one side, while the corn hole bags are filled with corn or other grain and have a rope attached so they can be thrown at the board. To play, players try to toss their bag into their opponent’s board using their own board as leverage. The first team or player to get all four of their bags into the opposing team’s board wins the game.
The basic design for cornhole boards has remained unchanged since it was first played on Southern lawns in the early 1900s. You can build your own set of cornhole boards using these instructions from Family Handyman Magazine (see link below). You will need some tools such as a router and drill press but most of them can be rented at your local hardware store if you don’t want to buy one just for this project.
The first step is to buy your materials. You can find most of these at your local home improvement store, but if you have a heat gun, it might be worth checking out Amazon.

1/4″ plywood (1 sheet) – $5

The next step is to build the frame. The best way to do this is with a table saw or router, but if you don’t have one, you can use a circular saw and hand saw instead. Cut two pieces of plywood 18″ long and two pieces 24″ long. Use a table saw or router to cut notches into all four corners of each wood piece using a 1/4 inch roundover bit.* Use screws to attach the notched corners together.*
