It depends on the size of your enclosure, what will be in it and whether or not you need a custom made enclosure. Building a basic enclosure for a hatchling tegu can cost as little as $100. You can add on to that price if you choose to have custom hardware made or if you opt for something more elaborate. On the other hand, going all out with concrete footings, driveway construction and other big ticket items could run into tens of thousands of dollars.

How To Build A Cheap Tegu Enclosure
Step 1: Plan your enclosure. In this example, I’m planning on building a cage for my male adult tegu. The dimensions of the cage will be 36″ x 24″ x 24″. As you can see in the picture below, the front of the cage is open, but there are two doors on the sides and one on top. I also have a section that’s closed off so he can hide from us and other animals that he doesn’t know very well (such as our cat).
Step 2: Buy your materials. For this project I bought 2 sheets of plywood and 4 pieces of pine 1x3s at Home Depot for about $70 total. If you don’t have any tools yet, this will cost another $40-$50 depending on what kind of tools you need or already have lying around your house (drill, circular saw, jigsaw or reciprocating saw). You might also need some screws and bolts if they’re not included with your panels or plywood sheet(s).
