Center Parcs began with the development of Sherwood Forest near the borders of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, England. The first phase of the parks development was in 1991 when it opened to much fanfare as a new way of enjoying one of England’s national parks. The first phase included three lodges and more than 100 luxury chalets. Centre Parcs was founded by entrepreneur Sir Robin Hunter-Delany as Longleat Forest Park Ltd., a subsidiary of his property development business Delancey Estates plc . It began operations at Longleat Forest, Wiltshire , England , on 1 January 1978 as a private members’ club for people buying plots of land to build their own chalets and live there for part of the year. In 1980 it opened its first chalets for hire to non-members, enabling them to stay in one place for longer than six months at a time. A second site was opened at Elveden Forest (now Waterworld) near Thetford , Norfolk , England , in 1982; both sites also had hotels where guests could stay while they built their own chalets on their plots.
