Measure and cut two pieces of 1-by-6 lumber (or use two 2×4s) to span the width of the doorway opening, using one piece at each end of your door frame. The top of each board should be flush with the top edge of your door frame and extend past it about 3 inches on either side. Screw these boards together at their ends with 2-inch screws. If necessary, notch out these boards so they’ll fit snugly against each other at the corners and interlock with each other in an upside down V shape, as shown in Photo 1 below.
