If you have been a long term reader of this blog, you know that I am obsessed with the idea of bringing closets (or any storage) into the 21st century by utilizing modern technology. Using some power tools, and some good old fashioned scissor skills, here is how we built our own DIY sliding barn doors for our walk-in closet.

Double Barn Door Closet Ideas

- Make sure that there is enough clearance at the bottom of your track so that when you open and close the door, there won’t be any rubbing against any other surface below it (for example: carpet). If there’s not enough room underneath, consider adding a piece of plywood or something similar under the track so that it extends past the floor level by at least 1/2 inch on each side (or whatever distance is needed).
- Purchase all necessary materials from any home improvement store near you (for example: Lowe’s or Home Depot).
This is a perfect example of our DIY double barn door. This project was very easy and it only took about an hour to complete. We used 2×4’s and 2×6’s to make this barn door, then stained it with a dark walnut stain. We also added some decorative molding to the top and bottom edges of the door.

This is one of our most popular projects on our site, because it’s so easy to build! The main components are 1/2″ MDF board, 1/2″ plywood, 1/8″ plywood, 2x4s, 2x6s and hinges. You could also use pocket holes to assemble the frame in lieu of using screws if desired.
