The most popular cruise liners can cost over US$2 billion dollars to build, but there are exceptions like Constellation built in the USA in 2004 that cost US$3 billion dollars.
Cruise ship cost to build
The cost of building a cruise ship is $350 million, with the average cruise ship costing $600 million. The average length of a cruise ship is 635 feet, with the largest being the Oasis of the Seas at 1,187 feet long. The average passenger capacity for a cruise ship is 2,500 passengers.
Cruise ships are built in three different ways:
Conventional construction: This is when the shipyard builds a large dry dock and sinks the vessel into it. Then workers build up from below, adding more sections until they reach the waterline. Once they get there, they flood the dry dock with water and float the vessel out. This method is used by most modern cruise ships because it’s cheaper and faster than other methods. However, this technique can only be used on vessels that aren’t too large or tall because it would be difficult for workers to access certain areas inside during construction due to lack of space between decks (in comparison to other methods).
Modular construction: Modular construction involves building sections of the ship in separate locations and then transporting them to their final destination where they’re joined together piece by piece until complete. This method saves time and money but requires
In the construction industry, the cost to build a cruise ship is the sum of all direct costs incurred during the construction process. In addition to direct costs, cruise ship construction includes overhead expenses such as insurance, management and accounting services.
Costs are usually expressed in U.S. dollars or euros, but some cruise lines use their home currency for this purpose. Cruise lines based in North America tend to use U.S. dollars, as do most European companies. The exception is Costa Cruises, which uses euros for this purpose.
The cost of building a cruise ship depends on its size and complexity, but also on how much time has elapsed since the last new ship was built by that line. It’s not unusual for a company to wait several years after delivering its last new vessel before starting to build another one.
