The building was constructed between 1979 and 1983 by developer Harry Macklowe, who had purchased the property for $10 million in 1975.
The tower was designed by Der Scutt of Swanke Hayden Connell Architects. The structure includes a two-story shopping mall that connects to an adjacent building at 701 Fifth Avenue by a sky bridge. The building’s facade consists of pink granite with gold-colored metalwork on the upper floors, which are decorated with pink glass windows. The lower floors have opaque white windows.
The building’s lobby features black and white marble tiles and brass railings surrounding the columns and steps that lead up to the mezzanine level. The ceiling is painted white with clouds and blue accents.
The tower has been owned since 2005 by CIM Group LP, which purchased it from Donald Trump for $1 billion. In 2015, Forbes named the Trump Tower as one of the most expensive buildings in New York City. As of September 2016, only three apartments remain unsold in the building
