The Trump Tower is a 58-story, 664-foot (202 m) building located at 725 Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

The building was constructed between 1979 and 1983 by developer Harry Macklowe, who had purchased the property for $10 million in 1975.

The tower was designed by Der Scutt of Swanke Hayden Connell Architects. The structure includes a two-story shopping mall that connects to an adjacent building at 701 Fifth Avenue by a sky bridge. The building’s facade consists of pink granite with gold-colored metalwork on the upper floors, which are decorated with pink glass windows. The lower floors have opaque white windows.

The building’s lobby features black and white marble tiles and brass railings surrounding the columns and steps that lead up to the mezzanine level. The ceiling is painted white with clouds and blue accents.

The tower has been owned since 2005 by CIM Group LP, which purchased it from Donald Trump for $1 billion.[2] In 2015, Forbes named the Trump Tower as one of the most expensive buildings in New York City.[3] As of September 2016, only three apartments remain unsold in the building

The building’s large size makes it one of Manhattan’s largest residences (currently tied with Carnegie Hall Tower).

The construction of this building created controversies that have been extensively covered in the news media. Subsequent owners have been involved in legal disputes with the city over its status as an illegal structure due to irregularities in its construction permits which were issued under Mayor Edward Kochs administration.[3][4]

The building has served as the headquarters for The Trump Organization since its completion and as the headquarters for the 45th President of the United States since January 2017 until his inauguration on January 20, 2017 when he moved into the White House. It was the tallest structure in New York City until 2001 when it was surpassed by the Empire State Building after 40 years of being the tallest building in New York City. In 2008, it was ranked 292nd among America’s tallest buildings.[6] It remains the 100th tallest building in the United States as of October 2015.[7]

It is located on a site formerly occupied by an Equitable building called the “Taj Mahal” that had been demolished in 1979 to make way for the 58-story mixed-used tower. The building contains both luxury condominiums and commercial space. It has several levels of outdoor terraces with various features such as fountains. The top floor of the building is 29 stories high and contains a two-story penthouse apartment with a wraparound terrace, with views of Central Park. The penthouse is listed for sale at $125 million with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, although it has yet to receive any offers since its listing in October 2012.[1][2]

In 1983 Donald Trump acquired the Bonwit Teller building for $10 million and constructed Trump Tower at 725 Fifth Avenue.[3] The Bonwit Teller building had been built in 1929 to house a retail store for women’s clothing;[4] it was designed by architects William Van Alen and H.
