The project was planned to serve as the new home of the Nevada Wildcats football team, which presently play at the Mackay Stadium ( a.k.a. University of Nevada, Las Vegas Stadium) and the UNLV Lady Rebels basketball team. The stadium was originally planned to open in time for the start of the nationally televised championship game between USC and Virginia Tech on January 4, 2015. However, due to problems with funding, construction and scheduling issues, these plans never came to fruition as by 2017 only 13% of the project was complete and all work had ceased indefinitely.
