How to build a 2 barrel septic system

You can use this system for your home or cabin, or even as an emergency backup in case of power outages or other disasters. The whole project should take only about two hours of your time and cost less than $20 in materials plus the cost of the 55 gallon drum. You will need a few basic tools such as a drill, sawsall or jigsaw and a 1/4 inch bit for drilling holes through the bottom of your 55 gallon drum.
The first step is to clean out your drum thoroughly by washing it with soap and water and then rinsing it well with fresh water.
Next you will need to cut three holes in the bottom of your drum using a hole saw or jigsaw:
one hole for the drain pipe that will carry waste water away from your home; one hole for the vent pipe that allows air into the tank to keep it from overflowing; and one hole so you can add new material into the septic tank as needed.

Step 1 – Dig the Hole

I have a 55 gallon drum septic system. It works great, no odor and I can pump out the tank with a portable pump for about $20. This is much cheaper than hiring a company to pump it out every year or so.
It’s not a single barrel system though, it’s two barrels connected together in series with a valve between them. The first barrel is used as a primary sedimentation tank and the second barrel is used as a secondary treatment chamber where the effluent flows through bio-active rock beds to remove organic matter before going into the leach field (which consists of gravel covered with soil).
Building a 2 Barrel Septic System

If your septic tank is getting old or you just don’t want to spend the money on a new one, then maybe it’s time for you to consider building your own septic tank.
A homemade 55 gallon drum septic system is an effective way to reuse an empty oil drum and save money on your plumbing bills. These systems are easy to build, easy to use, and can last for years if properly maintained. The only problem with these systems is that they are usually too small for large families; however, if your family size is average or small then this should work fine for you.
These systems work by allowing the solids in your waste water to settle in the bottom of the drum while allowing the liquids to pass through into another container above it. After some time has passed all of the liquid will have drained from your drum leaving only solid materials left behind which can then be disposed of accordingly.
The process of creating one of these systems can be broken down into three parts: acquiring an empty oil drum, attaching a pipe extension with a valve attached at one end and a drain spout at the other end so that liquids can pass through without mixing with solids which would clog up

A septic tank is an underground, watertight, concrete structure that receives and stores domestic sewage. The septic tank is connected to the house and the drain field (also called a leach field). The drain field has one or more perforated pipes called leach lines which lead to absorption areas or seepage fields.
The septic tank filters waste water through a bed of gravel, sand, and/or organic material. During this process, solid wastes settle to the bottom of the tank as sludge and scum floats on top as scum layer. The scum layer is removed from time to time by pumping out waste water from the base of the tank with a sewage pump (pump truck). Sludge and scum are then disposed of onsite in accordance with state regulations.
In general, septic tanks are used for small communities where there is no sewer system and for homes located away from municipal sewer systems.
