The Burj Khalifa is a skyscraper in Dubai. It was the tallest building in the world, standing at 829 metres (2,717 ft), until it was surpassed by the 828-metre-tall (2,717 ft) Q1 Tower in 2010. It is also the tallest man-made structure ever built, and has held the official title of tallest building in the world since its completion.
Construction on the tower began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009. The building officially opened on 4 January 2010, and is part of a larger complex called Downtown Dubai at the ‘First Interchange’ along Sheikh Zayed Road; it is located between Emirates Towers and the Palm Jumeirah. The tower’s architecture and engineering were performed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), who were inspired by a folding fan design for the structural system.
The investment cost of Burj Khalifa’s construction was estimated to be US$1.5 billionnearly US$300 million greater than that of Taipei 101 which previously held the record for world’s tallest building. The tower is located on the Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was completed in 2010, and it took two years to construct it.
The skyscraper was designed by Adrian Smith (who also designed the Jin Mao Tower) and Bill Baker of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). SOM is responsible for many high-rise buildings around the world. The design team completed initial designs in 2005 and construction began in 2006.
It took 18 months to pour all the concrete used to construct the tower, which is enough concrete to build a sidewalk that would stretch from New York City to San Francisco!
